The study of history provides knowledge and understanding of what happened in the past, what is happening now, and a path for what could happen in the future. One group that studies African American history at Burke is African American History Challenge. Students learn about slavery to modern times including topics such as the Middle Passage, Juneteenth, the 13th, 14th, & 15thAmendments to the Constitution, Plessy vs. Ferguson, the 1963 March on Washington, the Voting Act of 1965, Brown vs. the Board of Education, Omaha history, and much more. This year, the group has been meeting on Thursdays from 4- 5 pm on TEAMS. The year culminates in February at the African American History Challenge Competition. Teams from throughout the metro area compete for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize. The 1st place winners from the local competition compete in the national competition held in June.
